Wood Selection

Selecting the right species for your project is an import part of the design process. The aesthetics and material properties of different species make them uniquely fit for specific purposes.

The primary characteristics we take into account when selecting wood for a project are the following:

aesthetics: this is how the wood looks and feels. Is it warm or cool? does it grab attention or does it provide a more neutral canvas for something else? Does it match or compliment other furniture in the space?

material properties: As with any category of materials, different woods have different material properties. Hardness, rot resistance, texture, and work-ability all vary from species to species.

sustainability: Wood is among the most beautiful and precious natural materials on earth. We make a priority of knowing where every board we use in our shop comes from, and that all the wood we use is harvested and transported in a manner that minimizes harmful impacts to our native forests.
